Wood Pellets

Description

Wood pellets are compressed biofuel cylinders made from sawdust or wood shavings, commonly used for heating and energy generation. They are valued for their high energy density and renewable source.

Shipping and Storage

Wood pellets are shipped in bulk or bags. They must be stored in dry, well-ventilated areas to prevent moisture uptake, which can cause pellets to swell or disintegrate. Storage silos should be monitored for heat and off-gassing.

Risk Management

Risk management includes preventing moisture ingress, monitoring for self-heating or spontaneous combustion, and using PPE during handling to avoid dust inhalation. Proper ventilation is essential.

Dust

Wood pellet dust can irritate the respiratory tract, eyes, and skin. Prolonged exposure may cause respiratory discomfort. Use masks and goggles, and minimize dust generation.

Explosion Risk

Wood pellet dust is combustible and can form explosive mixtures with air in confined spaces. Strict controls on dust accumulation, regular cleaning, and avoidance of ignition sources are necessary safety measures.
