Bauxite
Description
Bauxite is an aluminum ore consisting of hydrous aluminum oxides and minerals such as gibbsite, boehmite, and diaspore. It is the principal raw material for aluminum production and is also used in abrasives, cement, and chemical industries.
Shipping and Storage
Bauxite is shipped in bulk, typically by ship or rail, and should be stored in dry, covered areas to prevent moisture absorption and contamination. Storage areas should be well-ventilated to avoid buildup of dust and gases.
Risk Management
Bauxite is considered low risk, but dust control and appropriate PPE (dust masks, gloves, goggles) are recommended during handling to prevent respiratory and skin irritation. Prompt spill clean-up is advised.
Dust
Bauxite dust can cause mild irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system. Prolonged exposure should be avoided, and dust suppression measures employed.
Explosion Risk
Bauxite dust is not combustible, but as with most fine mineral powders, the formation of dust clouds in confined areas can present a minor explosion hazard if an ignition source is present. Good ventilation and dust control minimize risks.
