Silica Sand

Description

Silica sand is a granular material composed primarily of quartz (SiO₂). It is used in glassmaking, foundries, construction, water filtration, and as a proppant in hydraulic fracturing.

Shipping and Storage

Silica sand is shipped in bulk, bags, or containers. It should be stored in dry, covered, well-ventilated areas to prevent moisture absorption and minimize dust. Spilled material should be cleaned up promptly.

Risk Management

Handling silica sand requires controlling dust exposure, as inhalation of fine particles can lead to silicosis, a serious lung disease. Use of respirators, goggles, and gloves is crucial; minimize generation of airborne dust.

Dust

Silica dust is a significant health hazard. Even low-level exposure over time can lead to irreversible lung damage. Strict dust suppression, PPE, and regular health monitoring are essential.

Explosion Risk

Silica sand is not combustible; however, fine dust can form explosive mixtures with air in rare cases. Good housekeeping and dust control are important to prevent dust accumulation.
