Sand

Description

Sand is a naturally occurring granular material composed primarily of finely divided rock and mineral particles, most commonly quartz. It is widely used in construction, glass manufacturing, foundries, and filtration systems.

Shipping and Storage

Sand is shipped in bulk, bags, or containers. It should be stored in dry, well-ventilated areas to prevent moisture absorption and minimize dust generation. Covered storage is preferred to avoid contamination and caking.

Risk Management

Handling sand requires dust control measures, as inhalation of fine particles, particularly crystalline silica, can pose health risks. Use of PPE such as dust masks, goggles, and gloves is recommended, and spills should be cleaned promptly to reduce slip hazards.

Dust

Sand dust can cause mild irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Prolonged inhalation of fine crystalline silica can lead to silicosis, a serious lung disease. Adequate dust suppression and PPE are essential safety measures.

Explosion Risk

Sand is not combustible and does not pose an explosion hazard under normal conditions. However, the accumulation of fine dust in confined spaces should be avoided, as it can rarely form explosive mixtures with air.
