Salt (Coarse, De-Icing, Table)
Description
Salt is a crystalline mineral composed mostly of sodium chloride (NaCl), used for de-icing, food seasoning, water softening, and various industrial processes. It appears as coarse, granular, or fine powder forms depending on application.
Shipping and Storage
Salt is shipped in bulk, bags, or containers. Store in a dry, covered area to prevent moisture absorption, caking, and dissolution. Packaging should be sealed and protected from humidity and contamination.
Risk Management
Salt is generally safe to handle, but dust control and PPE such as gloves and goggles are recommended, as salt can irritate the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract. Clean up spills promptly to prevent corrosion and slipping.
Dust
Salt dust may cause mild irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract, especially in enclosed spaces or during bulk transfers. Prolonged skin contact may result in dryness or irritation. Use appropriate PPE to minimize exposure.
Explosion Risk
Salt is not combustible and does not pose an explosion risk. However, dust accumulation should be minimized as a general safety practice.
