Olivine

Description

Olivine is a magnesium iron silicate mineral that appears as green grains or crystals. It is used in foundry sand, refractory materials, slag conditioning, and as a soil amendment. Olivine’s high melting point makes it valuable in industrial applications.

Shipping and Storage

Olivine is shipped in bulk or bags. It should be stored in dry, well-ventilated areas to prevent moisture uptake and caking. Covered or sealed storage is recommended to maintain product quality and minimize dust.

Risk Management

Olivine is low risk to handle, but dust suppression and use of PPE such as dust masks and goggles are advised to minimize respiratory and eye irritation. Promptly clean up spills to avoid slips and environmental impact.

Dust

Olivine dust can cause mild irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Repeated exposure should be avoided; use dust control and personal protective equipment during handling and processing.

Explosion Risk

Olivine dust is not combustible and does not pose a significant explosion hazard. Maintain good housekeeping to prevent dust accumulation.
