Potash
Description
Potash is a general term for various potassium-containing minerals and compounds, most commonly potassium chloride (KCl), used extensively as a fertiliser to supply potassium to crops. It is typically found as a white or pink crystalline solid.
Shipping and Storage
Potash is shipped in bulk, bags, or containers, and should be stored in a dry, well-ventilated space, away from moisture to prevent caking and clumping. Sealed packaging or covered storage is recommended to protect product quality.
Risk Management
Potash is of low toxicity but may cause irritation to eyes, skin, or respiratory tract upon contact with dust. PPE such as gloves, goggles, and dust masks should be used during handling. Spills should be cleaned promptly to avoid slips and environmental impact.
Dust
Potash dust can irritate the respiratory system, eyes, and skin. It is advisable to use local exhaust ventilation and PPE to limit exposure, especially in bulk handling or processing areas.
Explosion Risk
Potash is not combustible, but fine dust can form explosive mixtures with air under specific conditions. Good housekeeping and dust control practices should be maintained to minimize the risk of dust explosions.
