Maize (Maize Gluten)
Description
Maize gluten is a byproduct of corn processing, high in protein, used as animal feed and sometimes as a natural herbicide.
Shipping and Storage
Maize gluten is shipped in bulk or bags. Store in dry, cool, well-ventilated areas to prevent caking, spoilage, and pest infestation.
Risk Management
Handling is generally low risk, but dust suppression and use of PPE such as dust masks and gloves are advisable during bulk transfers. Clean up spills to prevent slips and contamination.
Dust
Maize gluten dust can cause mild irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system. Prolonged exposure should be avoided; use appropriate PPE and dust control measures.
Explosion Risk
Maize gluten dust is combustible and can form explosive mixtures with air in confined spaces. Maintain good housekeeping and avoid ignition sources.
