Limestone
Description
Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed mainly of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃). It is used in construction, as a raw material in cement manufacture, for soil conditioning, water treatment, and in flue gas desulfurization.
Shipping and Storage
Limestone is shipped in bulk or bags. Store in dry, covered, and well-ventilated areas to prevent moisture absorption and caking. Protect from acids to avoid decomposition.
Risk Management
Limestone is generally safe to handle, but dust control and PPE such as dust masks, gloves, and goggles are recommended to minimize irritation. Clean up spills promptly to prevent slips and dust clouds.
Dust
Limestone dust can cause mild irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system. Prolonged exposure should be avoided. Use proper PPE and dust suppression methods during handling.
Explosion Risk
Limestone dust is not combustible, but fine dust can pose a minor explosion hazard if suspended in air with an ignition source. Minimize dust accumulation and ensure proper ventilation.
