Magnesite
Description
Magnesite is a mineral composed primarily of magnesium carbonate (MgCO₃). It is used as a refractory material in furnace linings, in the production of magnesium oxide, and as a source of magnesium in fertilisers and animal feed.
Shipping and Storage
Magnesite is shipped in bulk, bags, or containers. Store in dry, well-ventilated areas to prevent moisture absorption and caking. Protect from acids and humidity.
Risk Management
Magnesite is low risk to handle, but dust control and use of PPE such as dust masks and gloves are recommended to prevent inhalation and skin irritation. Clean up spills promptly to avoid slips and contamination.
Dust
Magnesite dust may cause mild irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Prolonged or repeated exposure should be avoided; use appropriate PPE and dust suppression measures.
Explosion Risk
Magnesite dust is not combustible, but as with other fine powders, it can form explosive mixtures with air in confined spaces if an ignition source is present. Good housekeeping and dust control are advised.
