Lime

Description

Lime, often referred to as agricultural lime or ground limestone, is a soil amendment made from crushed limestone (calcium carbonate). It is used to raise soil pH and improve soil structure for better crop growth. Lime is usually a white or light gray powder or granular material.

Shipping and Storage

Lime is transported in bulk trucks, bags, or containers. It must be stored in a dry, well-ventilated place to prevent moisture absorption and caking. Storage areas should be protected from rain and humidity.

Risk Management

Lime can cause irritation upon contact with the skin, eyes, or respiratory tract. PPE such as gloves, goggles, and dust masks should be used during application or handling to minimize health risks. Spills should be cleaned up to prevent slips and environmental impact.

Dust

Lime dust is irritating to the respiratory system, eyes, and skin. Prolonged exposure can lead to more severe respiratory or skin issues. Dust suppression and PPE are essential safety measures.

Explosion Risk

While lime itself is not combustible, fine lime dust can present a minor explosion hazard if suspended in the air in a confined space with an ignition source. Avoid creating dust clouds and keep areas clean.
