Feldspar
Description
Feldspar is a group of rock-forming minerals that make up about 41% of the Earth's continental crust by weight. Commonly found in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks, feldspars are used in the manufacture of glass, ceramics, and as fillers in paints, plastics, and rubber.
Shipping and Storage
Feldspar is typically shipped in bulk or bags. It should be stored in dry, well-ventilated areas to prevent moisture absorption and caking. Containers should be sealed and protected from extreme weather.
Risk Management
Feldspar is generally low risk to handle. However, dust control is important, and PPE such as dust masks and goggles is recommended during processing and transfer. Spills should be cleaned up to prevent slips and contamination.
Dust
Feldspar dust can cause mild irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Prolonged exposure may result in respiratory discomfort. Proper PPE and dust suppression should be used during handling.
Explosion Risk
Feldspar dust is not highly combustible, but as with many fine mineral powders, it can form explosive mixtures with air in confined spaces if an ignition source is present. Good housekeeping and ventilation are important.
