Sulphur
Description
Sulphur is a yellow, non-metallic element commonly used in the production of sulfuric acid, fertilisers, chemicals, and as a soil amendment. It is also applied in the vulcanization of rubber and as a fungicide or pesticide in agriculture. Sulphur is typically found in crystalline, granular, or pastille form.
Shipping and Storage
Sulphur can be shipped in bulk, bags, or containers. It should be stored in cool, dry, and well-ventilated locations, away from sources of ignition, oxidizing agents, and moisture, to reduce the risk of fire and degradation. Proper grounding and dust control are essential.
Risk Management
Sulphur is flammable and should be handled with care. Dust control, proper ventilation, and the use of non-sparking tools are critical. Personal protective equipment, including dust masks and gloves, is recommended to minimize exposure and risk.
Dust
Sulphur dust can cause eye, respiratory, and skin irritation. Inhalation of dust may lead to coughing, shortness of breath, or respiratory discomfort. Contact may also cause itching or mild dermatitis. Adequate PPE and dust suppression measures should be employed.
Explosion Risk
Sulphur dust presents a significant explosion hazard when dispersed in air and exposed to an ignition source. Bulk sulphur should be kept away from flames, sparks, or static discharge. Suitable fire prevention and dust management systems are necessary in storage and handling areas.
