Sodium Sulphite
Description
Sodium sulphite is a white, crystalline or powdery compound (Na₂SO₃) used primarily as a reducing agent, preservative, and antioxidant in various industries, including food processing, water treatment, and pulp and paper manufacturing.
Shipping and Storage
Sodium sulphite is shipped in bags, fiber drums, or bulk containers. Storage must be in cool, dry, well-ventilated places, away from acids and oxidizers, as it is sensitive to moisture and can degrade or release sulfur dioxide gas. Packaging should be tightly sealed to prevent caking and contamination.
Risk Management
While sodium sulphite is not classified as highly hazardous, dust suppression and personal protective measures (such as dust masks and gloves) are recommended during handling. Spillage should be cleaned up promptly to avoid slip hazards and environmental contamination.
Dust
Sodium sulphite dust can irritate the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Prolonged or repeated exposure may cause respiratory discomfort, coughing, or dermatitis. Proper PPE, including dust masks, gloves, and goggles, should be worn to minimize exposure.
Explosion Risk
Sodium sulphite dust is not easily combustible but, as with many fine powders, can form explosive mixtures with air in confined spaces if an ignition source is present. Keep handling areas free of ignition sources and control dust accumulation.
